Cosmic Girl Gods and Monsters A Superhero Novel R S J Gregory Books
Cosmic Girl: Gods and Monsters is RSJ Gregory's fifth book in his superhero prose series. It's worth reading, especially if, like me, you'd been on board from jump. But I'm grading it 2.5 - maybe 3 - out of 5 stars. Would've been a higher rating but guy persists in having on these lame yohos to edit his stuff. More on that later, probably.Thing is, I'm hooked good and proper on Cosmic Girl. I have to know what's going on with Britney Brookes and her whirlwind crimefighting career in Chicago and beyond, have to keep tabs on her ongoing relationships with her friends and family. In Gods and Monsters, Britney is still reeling from what went down in Cosmic Girl: Lost & Found: A Superhero Novel (3rd book) when she was catapulted over twenty years into the future. Gods and Monsters actually picks up moments away from the closing pages of Cosmic Girl: Unmasked: A Superhero Novel (4th book) as her dinner with the President at the White House is interrupted.
At this stage, Cosmic Girl's notoriety has gotten her on a first name basis with POTUS. She's now achieved a détente with a U.S. government that had not so long ago deployed hostile jet fighters that fired missiles at her each time she took to the skies. Cleared of murder charges, Cosmic Girl is now golden with Uncle Sam. In fact, POTUS has officially sanctioned an inaugural Metahuman Task Force to police the criminally-minded supers. He appoints Britney as team leader.
But Britney's first priority remains preventing a terrifying future from manifesting. So, while there's some wild action revolving around Cosmic Girl and friends corralling a most wanted list of shady new metahumans, much of the book focuses on Britney's hunt for Chimera, the global cabal what's at the root of that terrifying future.
It's a good superhero read, and Britney remains an appealing heroine. For some time now, Britney's upbeat personality has been tempered by the grim goings-on, and the narrative tone's been getting darker and darker, and I like that. RSJ Gregory stages several dynamic combat sequences, and he does write interesting character interplay. But I've some nags, and I'll just dive into 'em - and maybe I'll put up a ***SPOILER ALERT*** now. One thing that got an eyebrow arch from me is the speed at which Britney's dad and younger sister became bonafide costumed supers. Maybe not the government, because maybe it didn't know, but you'd think Britney would've been more cautious about allowing her fam to immediately join her in the field without proper, prolonged training. No, she tosses 'em a few comic books and tells them to read them so as to pick up superhero moves.
As mentioned, the character interplay is a strength. But, sometimes, the dialogue doesn't flow organically. It gets a bit too cheesy or cringy (like the way Mitchell's mom and also Chimera's ex-boss address Britney as "child"; c'mon, who talks like that unless in a soap opera?). I feel that the writer makes these wrong choices or isn't as sensitive to the flow or nuances of a natural conversation. As with the other entries, Gods and Monsters is told thru Britney's first person narration, in present-tense. And I may be obsessing about this, but there's something so off about Britney's describing "my slender waist" (twice) that would've been okay if only it'd been described thru third person narration. No, it doesn't come off as Britney's being braggy as much as it is RSJ Gregory's making an unnecessary choice in wordage.
- "I check my eye mask and gloves, then clip the utility belt around my slender waist." Ugh. My palm slaps my noble brow.
And then there's the occasional wrong application of a word: "How has she been able to allude the authorities for over six months?"
Another nitpick is the sequence in which Bill informs Britney that Mitchell's parents have arrived and Britney says he'll let Mitchell know, except she never does pass that on to Mitchell. This wouldn't be a big deal if, after that Bill/Britney conversation, the book had then cut to another scene or indicated that some time had elapsed, and we can then assume that Britney told Mitchell off-camera. Only, the scene kept on going and going, Britney and Bill hung up, and Britney hung out with her friends in the living room, and then went out to dinner, and not at any time do we read about Britney telling Mitchell, "Oh, hey, your parents are here now, two doors down." As such, we can conclude that either a) Britney is one callous or forgetful girl or b) it's a writer's lapse that the editor should've caught. It's the little things...
In the end, I still like Cosmic Girl and her friends and family. I dig that Santiago's younger self now counts as part of Britney's inner circle. I'm intrigued by Thanotosius, the Metahuman Task Force's enigmatic gadget man. I still like the world Britney inhabits and the high stakes involved. I don't like that every dang supporting character seems to be getting super powers (Bill better not be next). Gods and Monsters is a must-read if you'd been following this series. Else, if you're a newbie to this, maybe you won't be so impressed with the storytelling. I'm still on board for the next book, but, damn, RSJ Gregory, make sure whoever edits your stuff gets enough coffee in 'em, because whoever's been editing is one drowsy mother, and that's me being nice.

Great sequel to the Cosmic Girl books! Great action, good plot and characters that are not afraid to do what needs to be done.
In reviews for the previous books, I deducted 1 star because of an error that appeared several times in each book.
The error was fixed in this book (the author should fix it in the others; it is simple to do with KDP). With that error fixed, this book deserves a 5 star rating.
I look forward to the next book in the series!
I give it 4 stars for the inconsistency between this and the other books in the series the big one that grabbed my attention was in a previous book cosmic girl or Britney was living in the penthouse apartment and had just reunited with her boyfriend it says she gets out of bed naked and looks back to see Mitchell laying in bed(her bed) also naked that implys that they had sex but now in this book she starts making out with Mitchell and says shes ready now implying that they haven't had sex yet this may not sound like a big deal to most but i remember every book I've read and this sort of thing drives me crazy now don't get me wrong I like the books(every time I leave a bad or somewhat bad revue people always tell me you don't have to read it if you don't like it that just makes me mad if I don't like it I don't leave a revue at all) I just notice inconsistency like this one and I cant let it go(I have a little ocd sorry).
As usual it was awesome!
I have read all the books in this series and have never been disappointed.
Sometimes the characters conversations get corney but the plot and action is fun to read.
Thanks for great super hero saga. Looking forward to your next book. The characters are all personable. Make want to see as a graphic novel.
