In Tato Laviera’s third collection, poems celebrate the array of stripes and colors making up the American people. In the beginning section, “Ethnic Tributes,” Laviera crafts poems with titles like, “arab,” “black,” “chinese,” “greek,” “jamaican,” “spanish,” and “mundo-world.” In “boricua,” he fashions a timely plea for an end to prejudice, saying that for Puerto Ricans “. . . color is generally color-blind/with us, that’s our contribution, all/ the colors are tied/to our one.”
The latter two sections of the collection, “Values” and “Politics” build on the themes of ethnic exchange and the place of the boriqueño in that greater scheme. In “commonwealth,” Laviera writes of these tensions. “I’m still in the commonwealth/ stage of my life, not knowing/ which ideology to select.”
The poems of Tato Laviera are complex and engaging; through his words, his spirit, his bilingualism, and his dual identity he offers readers poems that are a celebration of life and identity.

Tato Laviera’s AmeRican
Tato Laviera is what many of you may not consider an “American poet,” due to the fact of him not being born in “America.” Born in Puerto Rico in 1950, Tato Laviera later migrated to the United Sates at the young age of nine. Being Puerto Rican and American was all Laviera believed to have known, and it influenced his work in many ways. His migration from Puerto Rico to America would force many to believe that he should have let go of his origins, and “adapt” and “adjust,” yet Tato never failed to remind himself and anyone that he was a mixture.
Tato Laviera’s book AmeRican is believed to have been the guide for many Latinos in America that have struggled and will struggle, with the force and restrictions that are placed upon them. Laviera has made it easy to understand that coming to America was never an easy transition for immigrants. Although they have many internal concerns that start from within them as a person, they also have to deal with externally not fitting in. In his book AmeRican, Tato Laviera allows his audience to visually adapt to the “new” America.
Writing for many different nationalities, Tato Laviera promotes the idea of America being big and diverse enough for everyone. Most of his writing within the book has a mixture of both Spanish and English literature backgrounds. Laviera was able to take his personal experiences and turn it into being his talent. He is primarily famous for taking both of his languages and frequently mixing them into one context, always reminding us that he has pride in being AmeRican.
In the very beginning Laviera attributes his book to the following ethnicities Boricua, Arab, Black, Chinese, Cuban, English, Greek, Irish, Italian, Jamaican, Japanese, Jewish, Russian, and Spanish. He shows a deep understanding of the number of ethnicities that struggle with their identities. He sends out a broad message allowing these people to know that they all originally come from different countries, but they all share similar experiences as immigrants. The experience of not being accepted, but wanting to be accepted without losing who they are. Tato Laviera then breaks his book into three different sections, one titled “ Ethnic Tributes,” “Values” and the last titled “Politics.”
In the first section of Tato Laviera’s book,“Ethnic Tributes,” he dedicates a page to each ethnic group. On these pages Laviera states what he believes are some of the values of each of these ethnicities, in his lines he holds each ethnicity at their importance and show appreciate from them and their differences. On the page dedicated to the Spanish his first two lines may be the most interesting of them all.
“ your language outlives your world power.
but the English could not force you to change” (Laviera, 33)
Laviera shows his Spanish pride, admitting that they pay homage to what many consider being a “wild tongue.” His dedication on this page is so moving, and we can predict that only a person, who has experienced great prejudice, would be able to write such a prose. Tato Laviera did not only speak for himself, be he spoke for everyone and future. It may be safe to say that he even spoke to the old America versus the “new” America.
The first section of Laviera’s book AmeRican deals with the issues that many ethnicities face, this section tells each group not be immersed by the melting pot. He does this by reminding them what they stand for individually, and reassuring them that they never have to “let it go.” He wants these people to adapt to the American culture in their own time, and when they feel the need to. Laviera never wants them to feel as if they are forced to be American, just because they are in America especially when you eventually become Americanized the longer you are within the country. Tato wants them to know they can hold onto their culture and origins for as long as they please being that for some people it defines who they are.
Some of the major themes in the “ethnic tributes” section of his book are immigration, and transcultural identity. On each page, Tato shares the immigration story of these people. He gives a manual for different immigrants, and through each manual he is instilling something in them, it is almost as if he wishes he had this guide when he first arrived in America. Throughout the collection of poems it is obvious to see Laviera’s struggle, and the need for many immigrants to read his collection as a guide for their transition; or should I say migration.
